Jacobus (Jaco) Phillipus Fouché was born on 29 November 1967 in Klerksdorp. He matriculated in 1985 at Hermanus High School. His first writing in the shape of newspaper reports appeared in the Hermanus Times.
He later completed a course in journalism at the Cape Technikon and then started working as a programmer.
His tenure in London was the catalyst for his debut novel, Die ryk van die rawe, which appeared in 1996.
It was awarded the Eugène Marais Prize, and was a finalist for the M-Net Prize in 1997.
He was a scriptwriter at a TV-channel before settling in Bloemfontein and busying himself with writing and translating.

- Jaco translated the much discussed novel of Kleinboer, Kontrei into English; the translated work was published in 2007 under the title Midnight Missionary.
