Johnny Masilela is a journalist (editor at Sunday Sun), author, screenwriter and active member of Ijima Letuthuko, a collective of intellectuals and traditionalists spearheaded by Ndebele monarch King Mayitjha III, with its main objective being to preserve and record Ndebele art and oral literature.
He started his journalism career with the Pretoria News, for which he wrote a regular column. His first novella Deliver Us From Evil: Scenes From A Rural Transvaal Ubpringing was published in 1997 by Kwela Books. This was later adapted for the screen by Masilela as Christmas With Granny, which won the M-Net New Directions Film Award. He has also written various short stories included in collections such as At The Rendezvous of Victory, Crossing Over and In The Rapids. We Shall Not Weep draws inspiration from, among others, the rich culture of the clolourful Ndebele tribes people of Mpumalanga, the place of the rising sun.
