Gail Dendy

Biographical info

Gail Dendy was born in Durban, is married, and now lives in Johannesburg. She holds five university degrees, viz a BA (Natal U, Dbn), BA (Hons)(Speech and Drama) (Natal U, Pmb (top student)), a Higher Diploma in Library Science (Natal U, Pmb (top student)), a BA (Hons) (cum laude, Jewish Studies)(Unisa) and an MA (cum laude, Jewish Studies)(Unisa). Her MA dissertation dealt with symbolism in Antiquity and was supervised by Joseph Gutmann, an American academic and world authority on Jewish Art. Gail also holds one year of an LLB degree, having decided ultimately not to complete those studies.

Gail has worked in numerous different fields, the common thread being the use of the written word. As an academic she taught Jewish Studies at Unisa (specialising in Jewish Art) where her Study Guides are still used more than two decades later. Gail then worked as an advertising copywriter, a newswriter for Radio 702, a compiler of poetry programmes for SAfm radio, and finally as an assistant editor on the South African Law Journal. She is currently a Knowledge Manager and Information Specialist at a large international law firm where her duties involve research, editorial work, and the creation and maintenance of the Library & Informations Intranet page.

Unusually for a person so wedded to the written word, Gail is known as an outstanding Contemporary Dancer. She holds the RAD Advanced Ballet Performer's Certificate as well as a teaching qualification in Cecchetti, and studied Contemporary Dance in Johannesburg under Robyn Orlin. Further dance training occurred at the London School of Contemporary Dance, Bat Dor (Tel Aviv) and Alvin Ailey (New York). She performed together with Robyn Orlin on stage and TV for almost a decade, winding up her dance career with a nomination for the first-ever AA Vita Award in the category of Best Performer. Gail continues to dance, doing Vaganova (ie Russian) ballet classes several times a week.

Gail enjoys music, her tastes including both Classical and Rock. In 2005 she and her husband travelled 10,000 miles to attend several of Paul McCartney's US Tour concerts. Her favourite movie of all time is Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush. Other passions include Environmental protection and Animal Rights.
