Kenneth de Kok
Kenneth de Kok was born in Johannesburg in 1949 and spent his boyhood in Stilfontein, a gold-mining town in the Western Transvaal (now North West Province). He went to boarding school in Kimberley and after conscription, studied law and politics at the University of the Witwatersrand. He worked in Zululand, but left South Africa in 1971 to avoid further military service. He lived in the UK, working for the London Underground and then managed a student hotel in Amsterdam. He moved to Canada in 1978. He was the supervisor of a detoxification centre before starting a business in the kitchen industry. He is self-employed.
Kenneth lives in the countryside near Kingston and is married to Carolyn Smart, a well-known poet and author. He has three sons. He regularly visits his mother and sisters, all of whom live in the Cape Town area.
