Die Profeet (ePub) | Poetry & Poetry Anthologies

Khalil Gibran

The Prophet, Almustafa, has lived in the foreign city of Orphalese for twelve years. As he is setting sail for home he is stopped by a group of villagers, who ask him questions about Love, Joy, Sorrow, Freedom, Pain, Giving, Work and other human affairs. His answers are mystical and poetic, and as evocative today as ninety years ago.

On love: "Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls";
On doubt: “Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother.”
On faith: “Faith is an oasis in the heart which will never be reached by the caravan of thinking.”
And famously, on children: “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They came through you but not from you and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.”
