Gulai's mother dies giving birth to her. And her father, Dr Orion Prosper, the only medical doctor on this tiny island in the Southern Atlantic seas, blames himself for his wife's untimely death.
For days afterwards he locks himself into his room, and Gulai's aunt has no other option but to seek advice from Dr Prosper's archenemy, Sophia, the island's midwife. For Gulai never stops crying and Sophia is the only one who knows how to soothe the baby's whimperings.
Thus begins Gulai's life on the island Ergo – betraying her father merely ten days after her birth … And her life has barely begun.
