E. Kotze

Biographical info

I was born on 17 October 1933 on the farm Langrietvlei in the Hopefield district. I grew up in Doornbaai, a fishing village on the West Coast where my father, Coenraad Walters, was attached to the North Bay Canning Company crayfish factory.

I attended primary school at the one-man school there and matriculated from Hoërskool Vredendal in 1950. After that I completed a secretarial course and worked at Sanlam until I married Willie Kotzé, a skipper from Lamberts Bay, in 1954. Four children were born from our marriage: a daughter, Marlene, and three sons, Petru, Hannes and Oostenwald.

During the period 1954 to 1972 we lived in various towns along the West Coast, namely Lamberts Bay, Walvis Bay and Hout Bay. Poor health put an end to Willie’s career at sea and we settled on the farm Sunnybrook on top of the Piketberg where we ran a fruit farm for nearly twenty years.

After my husband’s death in April 1989 I went to live in Vredenburg, the birthplace of both my parents. After six years I moved to Velddrif – a picturesque town along the Berg River, one of the few places along the West Coast that has still retained something of the character of a bygone era.

My writing career probably began because of the long periods of time my husband was at sea – and the stories that flowed from that. He was an entertaining and natural storyteller, not only regarding his experiences at sea, but also his eventful childhood at the salt pan near Lamberts Bay.

These narratives led to my first collection of short stories, Halfkrone vir die Nagmaal, which was published by Tafelberg Publishers in 1982. Most of these stories appeared in magazines over a period of 18 years before they were eventually published in book form.

Silt van die aarde was published in 1986 and Halwe hemel in 1992. Between the two collections a children’s book, Boetie-Jan se skilpadnes, was published. Waterwyfie en ander woestynverhale was published in 1997.

Halfkrone vir die Nagmaal received the Eugène Marais prize in 1983.
